Sunset Swipe No. 7

In January 2020, I was in Nosara, Costa Rica, on a photography assignment with a swimwear client shooting their new collection. After a day of shooting which wrapped up as we lost light around sunset time, I was mesmerized by the colors of the changing light over the ocean. As most of my creative ideas which come from seemingly nowhere, I thought it would be cool to capture long exposure images with camera movement.

That means using a slower shutter speed (captures blur) and panning the camera left to right (captures horizontal blur). My hope was that the horizontal lines of the waves, horizon, and clouds would create a cool multi-colored horizontal pattern in the image.

After testing various shutter speeds and lenses (ended up with my 70-200mm), I got the effect I was going for, and spent the following two sunsets capturing a handful of images I loved.

I enjoyed shooting like this for a change, where I don’t know what the image is going to look like while I’m shooting it. I didn’t end up looking through these images until November 2022, nearly three years later. Why? That’s a deeper answer for another time. Let’s just be happy I did and now they’re released into the world.
